Microsoft to sell homebrew 360 games, share revenue

Yep. That’s right. Microsoft are finally allowing homebrew games for the highly acclaimed Xbox 360. Not only does it open up new opportunities for developers, but it also makes it possible for more people to discover the amazing software that the homebrew community has to offer.

The idea is simple. People develop software with the Microsoft XNA development kit. Then, the software is sold via the community site and Microsoft gets a share of the profit.

Of course, it’s not always great with homebrew, even if it can have a new style of gameplay and such. As a result, Microsoft will be having trial modes on all of the games, giving you a full-featured, time-limited demo.

Good luck to any potential developers!

GPU Powered Macs and iPhones

MacRumors reports that future Macs and iPhones could support processing via the GPU, increasing the processing power by a vast amount. The Guardian points out that if you have an Nvidia or ATi card, then the odds are that you have over 100 microprocessor cores that are being unused. While these cores are designed for videos and gaming, they could also be used for general use.

Due to their specialized function, some tasks are better suited for GPU use. So far, research has focused on tasks such as weather predictions, but there are efforts to standardize this programming.

Wii hits 10.9 million US sales, becomes console leader

Text message from Nintendo

Nintendo has just sent out a second text message today, stating that,

“After just 20 mos, Wii is the new console leader in the US @ nearly 10.9 million units, says NPD 2day”

BTW, that’s only 102 out of the 160 possible SMS characters, so they have no excuse to write “2day”. So basically, the Nintendo Wii has finally overtaken Microsoft as King of America. Back in May however, the Wii was at 9.5 million.

GTA: Chinatown Wars

Tech & Gadgets Editors’ Blog reports that Grand Theft Auto could be released on the Nintendo DS in the near future. While many would just think, “What the hell?” this could turn out to be a promising release.

Intel to Deliver Quad-Core Mobile Processors Next Month - Mac Rumors

According to Mac Rumors, Intel are planning on releasing a new quad core Core 2 Extreme. While this chip is very power-hungry and so it will likely only see high end laptops, it could be used in other computers such as the Apple iMac, which currently uses a mobile chip.

While quad core is normally just for bragging rights, and does not benefit most people for perfomance, Apple’s new OS, Snow Leopard, due to be released in a year or so is rumoured to focus on multi-core performance, and so there could be a large performance increase.

Brain at work during a good night’s sleep

Scientific research has proven that a good night’s sleep can actually improve your memory, and can help you to absorb information better.

Dr Sophie Schwartz, from the University of Geneva, gave volunteers the task of remembering unknown faces or using a joystick to follow a moving dot on a computer screen. Some were then allowed to sleep while others were not. They repeated the same tasks the next day while having their brains scanned. The results showed that “a period of sleep following a new experience can consolidate and improve subsequent effects of learning from the experience”, says Schwartz.

Have a look at this link. Has some very interesting information.
